چکیده

There is no dispute that the comprehension of spoken language involves the use of different types of linguistic information-syntactic, semantic, lexical, prosodic. What is less clear is when and how these different types of information are used in the comprehension process. In this paper we focus on prosodic information, and ask whether it is used to constrain the immediate structural interpretation of an utterance. One view of the comprehension process is that it involves the immediate integration of various types of linguistic information as they become available. There is considerable experimental support for this view. A number of studies (e.g. Grosjean, 1980; Marslen-Wilson & Tyler, 1980; MarslenWilson, Tyler, & Seidenberg, 1978; Swinney, Zurif, & Cutler, 1980; Tyler & Marslen-Wilson, 1977) have shown that syntactic and semantic information is used on-line to determine the immediate interpretation of an utterance. Marslen-Wilson and Tyler (1980), for example, found that target words in normal utterances and in utterances that were grammatically well

Prosodic disambiguation and attachment height

This study investigates the role played by prosody in the syntactic and semantic disambiguation of string identical Relative Clauses (RC) and Pseudo Relatives (PR) in Italian. While RCs are embedded within the Noun Phrase (NP) they modify, PRs sit in a higher position in the syntactic structure, standing in a sisterhood relation with the head Noun. A production study with 8 Italian speakers set...

PROSODY & ATTACHMENT AMBIGUITY Is it all relative? Effects of prosodic boundaries on the comprehension and production of attachment ambiguities

While there is ample evidence that prosody and syntax mutually constrain each other, there is considerable uncertainty about the nature of this interface. Here we explore this issue with prepositional phrase attachment ambiguities (You can feelA the catB with the feather). Prior research has been motivated by two hypotheses: 1) The absolute boundary hypothesis (ABH) posits that attachment prefe...

Effects of prosodic boundaries on ambiguous syntactic clause boundaries in Japanese

We report the results of experiments designed to investigate the effects of prosodic boundaries on resolving ambiguous syntactic clause boundaries in Japanese. The head-final, prodrop nature of this language generates abundant syntactic attachment ambiguity for sentences that contain relative clauses. Two types of sentences with differing head nouns modified by relative clauses were examined. S...

Reading and Listening to Garden-Path PP Sentences in Brazilian Portuguese

The present study reports three on-line psycholinguistic experiments investigating syntactic attachment decisions in both silent reading and auditory comprehension of the same set of sentences containing ambiguous adjunct and argument Prepositional Phrases (PP) in Brazilian Portuguese. An eyetracking experiment shows that both adjunct and argument PPs are preferentially attached to the VP durin...
